Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEe) is a key part of a well-rounded education which prepares students for their lives both in and out of school, providing them with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. Children need to know how to be safe and healthy and how to manage their lives in a positive way in an increasingly complex world.
At Shoreham Academy the PSHEe curriculum aims to equip students with a sound knowledge and understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. It is delivered in an age-appropriate way and focusses on topics which will help students to become active and caring members of the community, recognise and accept their own strengths and weaknesses, and learn to face new challenges with confidence.
At Shoreham Academy, we have ensured our relationships education, our relationships and sex education (RSE) and our Health Education content meets statutory RSHE requirements. A link to the new Statutory Guidance from the Department of Education is provided here:
PSHEe is delivered over 3 full days and two half days during the academic year. On these enrichment days students have workshops and assemblies lead by a mixture of school staff and external visitors covering carefully selected topics relevant to the needs of our students. These have been carefully designed as a context through which to develop the concepts, skills and attributes. Although the specific content of PSHE education will constantly evolve as the world changes, these concepts are timeless. It is not enough to simply teach students about the issues covered in the suggested subject content. It is vital they have the opportunity to explore their attitudes, values, and beliefs about them and to develop the skills, language, and strategies necessary to manage these issues should they encounter them in their lives.
