Sixth Form Advice and Guidance Strategy 2023/2024
The objective:
The CEIAG programme at Shoreham Academy Sixth Form is integrated within the curriculum and briefing schedules and is designed to provide help at specific decision times. Shoreham Academy is committed to raising the aspirations of all learners in line with Shoreham Academy common purpose to support students onto the next stage of their lives, be it university, apprenticeships, training or employment. Careers education and guidance aims to develop the skills, talents, understanding and aspirations of all our learners, enabling them to become responsible citizens who achieve personal success and fulfilment in life. In the sixth form we regard students' destinations as one of our principal outcomes.
Our CEIAG programme will:
- Link effectively with the curriculum in order to maximise student learning
- Provide totally impartial and up to date information through close working with independent careers professionals, employers and FE and HE institutions
- Challenge stereotyping, deal with prejudice and discrimination, use skills of assertiveness and negotiation and encourage students to widen their career ideas
- Reflect the true nature of today’s and tomorrow’s world of work
- Support key Shoreham Academy policies including those for teaching and learning, assessment, recording and reporting achievement, equality and diversity, health and safety, able and talented, and inclusion (special educational needs). Raising students’ achievements to their full potential is a key goal of the Careers Education and Guidance policy.
Introduction
Shoreham Academy represents a culture of high aspiration, high expectation and success. Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) is recognised as playing an important role in motivating our students, promoting equality of opportunity and maximising their academic and personal achievements while at Shoreham Academy and beyond. We are committed to providing a planned programme of careers education for all students in years 12-13 to prepare students for the opportunities and challenges of adult and working life.
Careers Education and Guidance has a high profile at Shoreham Academy and a Careers Coordinator is appointed to manage and develop delivery to ensure the needs of our students are being met. All students have an equal entitlement to high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance that will provide them with an understanding of the world of work, help them to explore career options and support them in making decisions about opportunities open to them.
CEIAG is crucial in order to meet the skills, knowledge and understanding needed by each student. We initially based out strategy on the Careers Education Framework 7-19 (2010) and the 6 principles of impartial careers education:

- Provides comprehensive information and advice
- Raises aspirations
- Actively promotes equality of opportunity and challenges stereotypes
- Helps young people to progress
The Staff and Governors at Shoreham Academy recognise that career planning is not limited to just one stage in life. For this reason, careers education and guidance aims to develop career management skills which students can draw on at each stage in their career planning. The CEIAG programme is continually evaluated to improve its effectiveness. This policy and delivery are regularly revised and amended in order to meet the latest guidance and developments. Therefore, we have taken into consideration by government guidance and documents from the Careers Strategy: Making the most of everyone’s skills and talents (2017) https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/careers-strategy-making-the-most-of-everyones-skills-and-talents. This policy is available to the governing bodies, school leaders, staff, our careers guidance team, students, parents and training providers. We have also shown below how we meet the Gatsby Benchmark in our provision.

Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each pupil. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
|
All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

5. Encounters with employers and employees
|
Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.

|

8. Personal guidance
|
Every pupil should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a careers adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. They should be expected for all pupils but should be timed to meet their individual needs.

CEIAG programme Students in years 12-13 are entitled to:
- find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point.
- hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships
- understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.
At points across the school year, a variety of employers and external providers are invited into Shoreham Academy to talk about different careers. We encourage employers to get in contact with us so that we can integrate them within our existing delivery.

Students and parents are welcome to give feedback on any aspects of the CEIAG programme through student and parent voice. The CEIAG policy is regularly reviewed. This allows us to incorporate new initiatives and providers.
This review involves the Governing Body, Senior Leadership, Careers Co-ordinator, Student Council, and Careers Advisor.
