Enter the Dragons…

Budding Entrepreneurs at Shoreham Academy

Every term we have a whole school PSCHE day where each year group engages in a specific themed day. This term, the Careers Department had the pleasure of running the Year 11 Enterprise Challenge Day which was held on Wednesday 13th November.

Everyone loves Pizza…

Our students were given the brief to create a new pizza company. They were encouraged to think about their USP, finances, ethics, staff development, location and lots more. In order to maximise time on the day so that they could focus on the task, the students were asked to choose the sub team (branding, pricing, product, etc) within their mentor group which they would like to join. It gave them the chance to think about their own skills and aptitudes and how best they could develop and evidence these on the day to help give their mentor group the best chance to win!

Enter the Dragons…

No Dragons Den is complete without the dragons! In this case we had:

Jo Lucas from Silicone Sally

Linda Kianfar from Bake Out

Our very own Principal, Jim Coupe.

Our “Dragons” or judges as we kindly called them, had specific criteria on which to decide on the winning team and the students stood up in front of the judges and their peers as well (quite daunting!). They presented their company advert and then gave a presentation focussing on product, pricing, marketing, location, business plan, etc. The judges pulled no punches in questioning them and encouraging them to explain their business thinking in more detail.

Great ideas from the room…

And the Winner Was…

All of the teams had very interesting ideas. Some were stronger on branding, some on product or business innovation. Eco-Dough won overall but it was really close.

The judges noted that Eco-Dough had thought about local suppliers, sensible costings, environmental impact and had worked well as a team.

The Mentor Group K3 were delighted to receive a “Goody Box” as their prize which they all enjoyed in Mentor Time on Monday

The Careers Department is now developing Enterprise and Innovation Days for other year groups so watch this space.
