Shoreham Academy Summer School: July - August 2021
Shoreham Academy delivered a Summer School to those students involved in transition from Year 6 to Year 7. Every student who had a place in Year 7 for the 2021-22 academic was invited. The aim of the summer school was to support the transition of students, providing activities to encourage wellbeing, personal development, academic support and enrichment.
Students were split in ten groups, in line with their mentor groups for the upcoming year. This allowed them to build positive relationships with their peers with the intention of easing worries and concerns relating to starting school in September.
Parent/Carers were able to choose from two different weeks for their child to attend. In total, 291 students accessed the summer school provision. The school were delighted with the engagement of students and parents and believe it will make a huge difference to their transition into Year 7 and beyond.
All activities were planned by a subject specialist. Sessions were then delivered by a member of teaching staff after a CPD training session led by the subject specialist. This allowed each mentor group to be supported by the same staff all week. The activity programme was as follows:
Day 1 – Introduction to Forestry / Teambuilding
Day 2 – STEM
Day 3 – Arts & Craft
Day 4 – Literacy & Imagination
Day 5 – Sport & Olympic Values
We worked hard to ensure all activities were inclusive for students of all needs. We also employed support staff and teaching assistants to work 1:1 with those students with Education Health Care Plans, as well as supporting students with other SEND needs within the group.
The Summer School was funded by grants from the Department of Education. A breakdown of expenditure can be found on the table below:
