2018 – 19 Catch Up Programme
In academic year 2018/19, we will receive approximately £27,000 for Year 7 Catch Up. This money is allocated to support students that arrive into secondary below the expected level in Reading, Writing and Maths. This money will be spent on the following initiatives:
NGRT Reading tests
In the first 2 weeks of Year 7 all students sit a Reading test which identifies a student’s reading age. This allows us to identify which students will need extra support.
The tests and following reports ensure that literacy needs are identified and appropriate interventions and support is put in place throughout the year to help teachers identify those who are making progress with their reading and those who require extra literacy support.
Students identified with below chronological reading age and/or below expected learning in English will all be offered intervention during the course of the year. Most of these students will receive 1 hour a week of specific intervention with a specialist literacy tutor. There is also a book buzz club that these students will attend with the aim of fostering a love of reading using fun activities and lots of discussion.
Lexia is used to support students identified as having a reading age below 9.5 years. It is a highly personalised reading programme, students can independently practice and master basic reading skills such as phonics, vocabulary and comprehension without embarrassment.
Due to the large numbers of students who join us with below the expected literacy levels we now deliver a reading programme to all KS3 (Year7, 8 and 9) students during mentor time. Students are read to twice a week during mentor time and during a third session students present and discuss reading reports that they complete as homework. We have invested in a large number of texts for this programme ranging from classics to popular modern fiction. All of these books are challenging and will expose students to a wide range of vocabulary.
Students who are identified as coming to us below age expected learning in maths are targeted for small group intervention sessions led my experienced maths tutors. The school purchases Hegarty Maths, which is an online Maths programme that uses videos to teach Maths, and then tests their knowledge. This is set as compulsory homework with drop in sessions used to support students with their gaps in knowledge. The school also purchases TimesTable Rockstars challenge to motivate students to improving their everyday numeracy.
