F.A.Qs
How does my child become a member of the cohort?
-
As of September 2010 we will be identifying potential cohort members in Year 8. The programme of events does not really begin until Year 9 but some trips and events are offered to the Key Stage 3.
-
In September/October we send a pre-contact questionnaire. It is essential to fill this in honestly and return it to us as soon as possible.
-
Once we have received the questionnaires back we select our cohort based on a set of very strict criteria. (If you require any more information about the criteria see "contact details")
-
If your son/daughter has been successful you will receive notification, unfortunately we cannot inform unsuccessful applicants.
Why wasn't my child invited on a taster day?
Places on tasters are often limited to 15-20 students. Often we have up to 40 students in a cohort it is unfortunately inevitable therefore that some students will miss out. In the case of a generic taster - such as Maths, Science and Technology Taster @ Sussex University - we will send letters to the whole cohort and places are awarded on a first-come-first-served bases. But if the taster is specific - such as Dance @ the University of Chichester - we will approach the subject teacher and ask for recommendations.
All cohort members will be invited to attend campus tours, and whole cohort events.
What can I do help?
Parent involvement is key to making Aimhigher a success in our school and for the past two years we have been running a special pilot scheme in West Sussex that makes it even more important in our school.
The scheme allows us to invite parents/guardians to accompany their sons/daughters on Aimhigher events days. So far we have taken parents to Sussex and Chichester Universities for campus days, to Brighton Race Course for a Careers in Action Day and to Plumpton College for a Out-of-Bounds Activity Day. As well as days out we have run several events in school. Each cohort is invited to a special Parents and Carers evening, at the start of the autumn term. This evening introduces new parents to the programme and informs those returning of our plans and events for the year. This year for the first time we ran a joint exam revision session for our Year 11s and their parents. We bought in a speaker from Learning Performance.
Look out for letters from us in the post!
