KS3 & KS4

Part of Shoreham Academy's success in English comes from programmes such as the Soundswrite Synthetic phonics scheme. This scheme is aimed at Key Stage 3 students in Year 7 with a reading age under 9 years. The scheme will significantly improve students' reading ages and overall confidence. The Soundswrite sessions are run three times a week and are delivered by accredited teachers and teaching assistants.

Shoreham Academy also offers the Brighton and Hove football Literacy programme. This programme is aimed at Year 8 boys who would benefit from additional literacy practice. The sessions run for one hour and are highly popular because they are followed by another hour of football training by the Brighton and Hove football coach.

There is also individual help with literacy. The 1-2-1 Literacy programme for Year 7 students is a programme that consists of weekly one hour after school literacy sessions with accredited English teachers. This intensive form of support means that students will become more confident because they benefit from the individualised education that suits their needs.

The Literacy Leaders Award in Year 9. This programme runs on a weekly basis with three groups of Year 9 students who write a book designed for selected Year 5 and 6 students who have a reading age of 3c or below. From January onwards the Year 9 students will go to Eastbrook Primary where they will work with their mentees on improving their confidence in reading.

The Lunchtime reading club. The reading club gets together on a weekly basis to help reluctant readers improve their literacy skills. Students can read with each other or individually to build up their reading confidence.

Shoreham Academy is also keen on inviting writers from the local community to provide readings and workshop sessions for students. These sessions are inspiring and are intended to inform students' own reading and writing.
