First day of term at Shoreham Academy

The new Shoreham Academy opened its doors for the first time today welcoming almost 1,400 local students aged 11-19 of all abilities and all backgrounds.

The academy, which replaces King’s Manor Community College, is sponsored by the United Learning Trust, an educational charity which is the largest single sponsor of academies in the country.

Students coming to the academy today are dressed in the new uniform which was chosen by students, parents and staff.  As well as a new uniform, the academy has a new broad and balanced curriculum and a specialism of English supported by a theme of business and enterprise.  The academy also has a new pastoral structure with all students now belonging to one of three Schools which are named after famous authors who lived in Sussex – H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling.

From 2012, the academy will benefit from a multi-million pound programme of building and refurbishment on the existing site.  Until then, the academy is being housed in the existing school buildings.  Over the summer a number of enhancements were made to the existing buildings so that the academy can offer a full and varied curriculum from its very first day.

Shoreham Academy Principal, Ms Heidi Brown said: “There is great air of excitement at the academy as students arrive in the new academy uniform.  Students and staff are all eager to start lessons and take advantage of all the opportunities academy status now offers.

“Our predecessor school, King’s Manor Community College, had come a long way in recent years and we were particularly delighted with this summer’s GCSE results.  Shoreham Academy will build on these achievements and will take our school to even greater successes.”

On Monday 21 September, a special Foundation Ceremony will be held to celebrate the opening of Shoreham Academy.
